My new computer, a Commodore 64
« on: April 08, 2011, 07:18:40 PM »

For many years, I would use a joke when I was playing online multi-player games. When I was having a bad day and losing (OK pretty much everyday) I would joke on the chat that I need to update my Commodore 64 and buy at least a Pentium.

Well, now I can really buy a new Commodore 64!

Craig, I heard about this on NPR and had to go to their website to check it out.

I guess up next will be the Amiga?

Cool beans. My intro to the world of computing was the result of an Air force project I was working on and ground control was handled by a Commodore PET. 8k, 2 FDD, green screen. That led me to what would eventually become my current day job. BASIC was the rage then and I wrote a number of programs which were eventually sold through distributors. Time passed and Commodore eventually came out with the 64, an evolution of sorts.

My culminating project for the machine was an interface I designed and marketed about 30 years ago for HAM radio based on a 555 timer. I tapped the audio from the receiver, any receiver, through the timer with my magic circuit into the 64 serial port, and dit dah became letters and numbers on the screen. I still have a few in the basement. These new units have the look, maybe the feel, and certainly more features and power. Just a bit over priced for my taste though.

I have a VIC-20 in the attic.

I can remember chatting on IRC with someone running a Mac OS on an Amiga.

Very cool...

Not too long ago I discovered how some people "steampunk" their stuff, including guitar amps and computers.

and check this out

If that doesn't give you a headache, then I don't know what will.

I think that would be a Timex/Sinclair 1000
Got one in the basement somewhere, with an 8K memory "expansion" pack.
(and that was my second computer....)

Hey, my Rat Shack TRS-100 could still compose this..... but I'm not sure how I'd get it to the net.  It would probably have to be through RS 232 to another computer as the cassette port and modem are probably out!   ;D

P.S. Even better....I could print it out through the parallel port (if I could find the cable) scan it using text recognition and I'm good to go.  :o
