Looking at retiring. Local PA market has shrank to 2 guys with guitars and bose l1 compacts or expecting full line array and 16 movers on stage for $300... no middle left going back to event DJ stuff, half the work for twice the pay.

Amateurs worry about tactics.   Professionals study logistics.

Variations exist, and it's attributed to various military leaders.

Maybe that's why President Eisenhower built the interstate highway system after seeing the German autobahn.

My thoughts were that both hiways were built to move troops and machines around the country quickly. Regular folks using it were just a bonus.

Other quotes I like, often attributed to military leaders (going from memory here):

"Luck favors the prepared."

"Always have a careful plan and be willing to change it."

"Never miss a chance to move your bowels."

And then, of course, A. Einstein: "Things should be as simple as possible, but no simpler."

On Interstate highways: A couple decades ago a huge magnet was moved from Fermi Lab to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. I believe it was the heaviest thing ever moved over land such a distance and was on a trailer with over 100 wheels. When they got to the Sierra they went over State Route 88 (Carson Pass) because some of the bridges on Interstate 80 (Donner Pass) were deemed insufficient. Not dissing the Interstate system, I'm sure it will handle the tanks just fine, and I hope they're ours.

IIRC one of the criteria for the Interstate Highway System was that portions of it in every state would be built to accommodate military aircraft takeoffs and landings (weight, size).

My favorite military quote is " no battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy" (Helmuth Karl Bernhard Graf von Moltke  late 1800s).

Yes, you do "IIRC".  (YDRC) ;)  Something like a minimum distance (straight and level) per every minimum distance.

I spent a few days every summer staring out the window of the family Ford at entire army divisions taking up the right lane of the shiny new I95 for most of the drive from Maryland to NJ.  Quite entertaining for a little boy in the mid to late 50s.  I've always assumed they were testing the logistics of their new transport options.  Of course the Germans won their war with the French in the 1870s because they had observers in the US in the 1860s watching us move armies around by rail.  Everyone copies everyone else.

Maybe that's why President Eisenhower built the interstate highway system after seeing the German autobahn.

My dad knew a guy in Air Force during the Cuban Missile crisis and I remembering him talking about the planes lined up on the interstate in South Florida with pilots in the cockpit ready to take off.

Seems like some states (Oklahoma) aren't living up to this set of design criteria. Pretty much every Interstate and other highway in Oklahoma is riddles with pot holes and ruts, and rarely straight.

OKLA is trying to make I40 in Arkansas look good.

Compared to the stretch of I-40 in Oklahoma, the stretch in Arkansas DOES look good. As soon as you cross the boarder it's bumpy and wavy and filled with pot holes.
