I thought I read somewhere (maybe on the PSW) that multiple large eq cuts could lead to phase issues.

Minimum phase eq is a phase interaction. That's how it works. As long as you're not doing parallel eq (combining two copies of the same signal with different eq settings) it's really not an issue.

On occasions when I've subbed at a certain club where I was forbidden to change their "magic" eq settings on mains and monitors I just hit the bypass buttons. Performers were generally happy with the sound and even said it was the best that room had sounded. That was on a Mackie 24.4 and racks of eqs so there was limited processing available. As much as I like the options on a digital board I have no problem making it work without layers and layers of processing.

But... but.... you only get paid if you turn all the knobs....right?

Totally NOT true.  You still get paid if you turn them to the left.  ;D

Bullwinkle: This is the amplifier, which amplifies the sound. This is the Preamplifier which, of course, amplifies the pree's.

I see the following often in schools or HOW with less experienced sound techs. I look at the channel strip and ALL the bands have a boost. Basically the EQ is performing the duty (poorly) of the volume fader! I then try, patiently, to explain that using more than a couple of bands (especially boosting) might indicate that a different approach to the problem they believe needs fixing may be indicated.

LOL. Tim you're thinking of the old sound guy we used to have there. (You knew him) He was reliable but got drunk every night.

This is his replacement
