Sennheiser ew100 G3 handheld transmitter mute
« on: September 05, 2018, 10:32:48 PM »

Our church has a Sennheiser ew100 G3 handheld transmitter that has recently acted up.  Upon powering up it appears to be muted ("mute" icon is lit) the way that it is when the battery compartment is open or the capsule is removed.  This is separate from the RF Mute function.  The mic does not pass audio.  I have tried the reset in the advanced menu, which did not appear to do anything.  I have not tried swapping capsules with another mic, but will try that when I get the chance.

Any ideas on the issue?

Check that the mute button contacts are not stuck. How does the button "feel" when you push it.

The ew100 series handheld does not have a mute/mic button.

The ew100 series handheld does not have a mute/mic button.
I was thinking of the 300 series with the mute button next to mic capsule.

I use EW300 IEM systems and once in a while the 'MUTE' stays on when it should not and it does not pass audio. This happens when RF is a a problem so I just scan for a different freq and the MUTE goes off. Could it be the same thing?.... did you try a different freq? Do you scan each time?

After being certain that the frequencies match between the transmitter and receiver you may want to try disabling the pilot tone feature on the receiver and see if the unit unmutes.
Pilot tone is used rather than a simple squelch to help the receiver stay muted unless the "correct" signal is being received.
I have heard of systems that have experienced errors with this circuitry.

Thanks for the suggestions.  The mic wasn't even registering audio on the transmitter itself.  The transmitter also showed "Mute" on the small screen.

As it is an install we do not scan each time we power up.  However, I did try that with no change.

I think I have narrowed it down to the capsule.  If I swap capsules with our other unit the issue follows this capsule, while the capsule from the other unit works just fine on this transmitter.

Sennheiser RF mics will mute if the capsule is loose on the mic (transmitter) body. So, you may have a bad capsule, or it may have issues making contact with the body. Check all of the mechanical connections and make sure the contacts are clean. I'm not sure what the actual mechanism is (like whether there is a separate Mute/un-mute contact or whether it's just ALL the contacts). I'll try and look into this later today and report back.

You prob have figured it out by now but those Senns have a pesky feature-to me- (other brands may have also I dunno) that mutes the receiver when the battery compartment is open. It can drive you nuts if/when you forget about it while changing batteries. Edit-just reread OP and saw where you were already on this. Carry on.

Did you ever solve the problem?  I have a ew100 G3 that just started doing the same thing.  How did you solve it?
