QL5: Focus recall & panning
« on: July 03, 2018, 07:22:10 PM »

I don't see a pan parameter to be enabled for a focus recall. Is this "built" into one of the parameters which is on screen when you select what to focus for a scene which will be recalled?

For this example I'd like maybe 4 mics to pan to the right, with a fade time when loading the scene.

Per page 86 of the manual, it looks like pan is part of the "to st" or "to stereo" selection.

Edit: that was page 86 of the CL manual. I would assume it's the same function for the QL.

As David said.

Page 68 of the QL manual. Also, FYI - Pans don't crossfade, just faders and DCAs.

I just found that out. They don't crossfade... Is there any way I can pan 10x mics at the same time? Pref with automation?

If you have the channels, just run each mic to two inputs, one left, one right. Then use the faders as your pans.

Right..This would take some work.. I'm running 16 lavs through two stereo groups, to do some general EQ, routing those out to two stereo matrices. One stereo-group/matrix is routed to speakers on stage, the other stereo is going to wide speakers. So when I pan  the channel for instance to the right stage speaker, and right wide speaker, the sound is coming from that "scene" in the play which in this example is far right on the stage, but I still have one speaker on each side of the "scene", sort of a stereo setup, but the mics are all mono of course.

I'd have to DCA the channels in question then, as there's two scenes with several mics which need this panning, and a few with just a few mics which I can do manually.

I do a lot of theatre, and have talked to Yamaha reps a few times about this.  If I recall it could be done on a PM5d, but it's not possible now.  Not possible currently on the PM7 or 10 either.  I know Yamaha is trying to up their theatre presence (Carousel in Chicago is using a PM10, they came to USITT in force); this would be a nice, albeit small step in that direction.  Call you rep and recommend it.

You could try YammieQ if automation is important...

It seems like the new v5.00 firmware of QL/CL now supports fade time on the panning.

I saw that and thought of you.  It's like they were hanging out here...  :)

And I'm using it in a theatre show already.  Works, but a little clunky to program.  Made my base scene with pan selected on every channel, then add a time to the ones where I want it.  Channel by channel.  Now to add focus recall and timing to global paste...

How do you find it clunky? I fiddled around with it a little today and it "works" (By "works" I mean that it works fine in my test-setting at least) I don't see how this is more clunky to program than a fader crossfade? Anyhow, very nice that they introduced this feature.
