Mic for Didgeridoo?
« on: June 23, 2018, 10:25:34 PM »

Did an outdoor event last weekend which culminated with some fire dancers who, I was told would just need playback from their audio device.  Ended up that they were accompanied by a Didgeridoo player as well.  He had his equivalent of a pedal/mixing board on stage and was just an xlr to the snake.  Easy Peazey on the mix.  However I forgot to check what he was mic'ing the didgeridoo with (he had his own as part of his on stage set-up)

So what say you members of "the board."  What would be a good mic for something like a didgeridoo?  Kick mic for the low end?   A '57 cause they do "everything?"

I haven't miced one, but I am familiar with them. I would be tempted to reach for a 421, but a 57 would work as well.

It would be fun to learn to play one someday, but I don't know if I am macho enough for it... haha

SM58 will do.

The didgeridoo has an anti-nym:  didgeridon't.

SM58 is common, as is SM57.

I've also seen Beyer M69 and M88 used...with good results.

There was a band called Gondwanaland where the didge-player was quite active on stage, and so used to tape an Sony ECM44 into the end...which worked extremely well.

Cheers,
Tim

I'd avoid a kick-specific mic, as they're often heavily contoured - if I want a low-mid scoop and 10dB spike in the kHz range, I'll do it myself, thank-you-very-much.

So, anything with decent low-frequency extension will do fine IMO.
My choice from my own mic locker would be an SE Electronics X1D, unless it's used elsewhere. In that case, probably a Beyer M88.

I like to put an Audio Technica 2020 on the digs I mic.  Gets the high breathy sounds.  I also cut the low mids to get rid of any mud it produces.  One way are the other, I prefer a condenser over a dynamic.  YMMV.

Trying to remember the name of the guy who plays didg with a pedalboard, does a whole solo act, and coming up blank. But I remember him using the Audio-Technica clip-on mic.  Actually more than one.
