power amp rating question
« on: December 12, 2005, 10:06:15 AM »

I need some help here. If I connect a loudspeaker (500W program @ 8 ohm) and a stage monitor (135W program @ 8 ohms) to the same power amp channel, how much power will I need from the amp and at what impedance?

Well, for starters that's a very bad idea. These speakers will require very different EQ'ing, with feedback supression on the monitor a very real possibility, So they should be on seperate channels. As for power, they're both 8ohm speakers so they will share the amp power equally if hooked up to the same channel. You cannot exceed the power rating of the smaller speaker so that would total 135w program per box, 270w peak, or 540w peak for both speakers.
