Subs : 2 medium or 1 big?
« on: April 26, 2018, 09:44:17 AM »

Hey guys, Wondering which option you would swing towards here...

I am running a rig for my own covers band which is a simple 3 piece rhythm rock section.

I'm using 2 EV ETX12's and 1 Dynacord Sub800 for FOH. When I get into high volume, the sub can't keep up with the tops in terms of output. The Dynacord is discontinued but I found another used one in my area ...So I can run 2 tops with 2 subs.. But also thinking of a new high powered ETX sub.

The ETX sub is matched to my tops and has significant more output and punch than the Dynacord subs in question.

After measurements, I can only fit 1 ETX sub in my car as they are chunky.

Conclusion... x2 Dynacord 800 subs or 1 monster ETX sub? Love to hear your thoughts.

While I can't comment on the performance of either sub in question, I'm personally a fan of having a more modular system made up of smaller pieces. You can scale up or down as needed.

With only one, larger sub, you'll be schlepping it around for every gig no matter the size. Especially important if you're loading it on your own very often.

If you can, get a THMini instead. I have the ETX12p and use them with TH118s, it’s incredible what just a good sub can do. The THMini will be smaller, go louder and sound a ton better. if you can shell out for that and just continue to add more of those in the future you’ll be really happy you did.

Were you looking at the 15" or the 18" sub? There are more than one sub's in the ETX range.

Likewise there are a lot of different options otherwise.

If you think that the 6dB more volume by adding another identical sub will make a significant difference then go for it.

In my band, I own the PA but I stash a set of tops with a band mate.  He handles the transport.  Often he has them in position and up on poles before I get to it.

Maybe you can share the love and do the cooperative carry thing?  Or buy a beater van for your gig life?  ( I have a 94 Astro’Fari AWD with 190k that is amazingly useful for medium sized gigs where I need larger than a Highlander, smaller than my box truck.  Not pretty but it works...)
I have the luxury of reliable bandmates...

Anyone seen the interstate battery commercial with the rock band jumping in the 70's van goin' "to melt faces" at the county fair?

ETX sub.

Would it be possible to borrow the used one to try it, see if you feel it is enough for the band? I'm sure even if you had to pay a small hire fee, you may be able to borrow it for a show and see how it goes, and that'd give you an idea of what solution was best.

...and to see it really fits in your vehicle!  :-)

You can borrow mine.  Sadly, I'm in Australia.

I'm in the blue mountains mate! Haha

Looks like some recommend option A and others option B. It seems either option I go will be significantly better than where I'm at right now!
