I get the mic drop thing as a way of saying "job done" or "mission accomplished" and I'm OK with it IF we work it out in advance.

I remember doing a WWF show and we sent in the worst POS RF mic in the shop. When I asked my buddy what the deal was, he said "watch what The Rock does with the mic".
After jumping up on the ropes, The Rock launched the mic over his shoulder and his guy caught it...most of the time.
Any damage would be compensated.
All for the Show.

The WWE is used to paying for busted gear. They bought us one of those 12 channel mini ETC dimmer racks once. One of the wrestlers picked it up and threw it down the hallway!

The dimmer was actually fine, but they bought us a new one anyway.

Am I the only sound guy who hates when someone “drops the mic?”

Under these conditions, the mic should be considered a consumable item.

Here's my logic.  If it (dropping, slamming or throwing the handheld) is known to be "part of the show", then it should be an expense item that will be charged every show.

Three shows in one night where the the mic is purposely abused would incur three charges.  I'll temper this with: If they can accept, in writing, the possibility that the handheld may not be reliable in the 2nd and 3rd show then, as Shirley Caesar wrote, "No Charge".

Not all damage can be detected by quick go/nogo testing.

....

From what i've heard, back in the day, whenever Pearl Jam did a show their PM would go to the venue and sound CO before the event and pay them in advance for the piece of stage and mic stand that Eddie was gonna "spontaneously" destroy in the middle of the show.  That never bothered me.  That's show business.

But i clearly remember a certain act in the late 90's destroying most of our gear on stage because they were annoyed at whatever they were annoyed with.  IIRC, the Sound Co got compensated, but it was still a PITA to be short a bunch of gear that was already spoken for for the next several weeks....

Green Day sends their techs out to local pawn shops to buy up any "sorta playable" drums, guitars,  and guitar cabs. Which they spend the day whipping that junk into shape, just so it can get destroyed on stage during the finale.

If dropping a mic is a part of your "show", you should bring your own mics. Intentionally breaking equipment is a crime in all other fields isn't it?

Nope. Federal law only requires overtime after 40 hours in a pay period, and a 30 minute meal break every shift. There's no laws that dictate how long you can work straight. I've done 18 hours straight for the City with no overtime. Then my boss gave me a couple extra days off that week so I wouldn't go into overtime.
