Am I the only sound guy who hates when someone “drops the mic?”

It irritates the hell out of me, makes them seem childish and stupid.

I bet they would love it if I wanted to have to some fun and smash their car windshield.

Oh yeah-look whos cool now------------

It is the total disrespect for other peoples property that really gets to me.

Even when I rent something, I do not abuse it.  I care for it as if it were my own.

I know others don't feel that way, but that is the way I was raised.  Back when there were ethics.

That is the way I feel.

This is why I keep a few $10 Behringer mics in my kit.  Unprofessional mics for unprofessional people.

Send them an invoice for a new grille.

I do it all the time even if it's not damaged in any way, just because it ANNOYS the hell out of me when people treat equipment that way.

I feel like I've sold another microphone.

Yes, and if I think it's gonna happen I have my finger on the channel mute.  Take the jerk's thunder away and then present a bill to the promoter...

I've had promoters argue with me over an SM58 and one of them flat said "I don't care if XYZ drops a wireless, I'm not paying for it."  I suggested he deduct it from artist settlement.  That promoter now pays more money per show since he's not willing to compensate us for such losses.  In this instance the performer "spiked" the mic, not just dropped it.  The ball was pushed against the mic element.

Like the air horn sample that's found its way into DJ sets, I don't understand the attraction of dropping a mic.

Sadly, I think it is the attraction of tearing something up on stage.

In a way like the smashing of guitars decades ago.  But the guitars belonged to the artist, not to the rental company.

The general public likes to see stuff get torn up.  Just look at you average riot. :(

Al,

I tell people right upfront, you drop my mic, you buy me two. Thank you for signing this legally binding contract. Any questions, here's my attorney's card.

Whoever started this lame trend has obviously never purchased a microphone. They have now; thanks to Verizon and other mic drop ads, I now charge a refundable deposit on my rental microphones for public speaking; $300 for wired and $600 for wireless. If no one drops them, you get your deposit back.

I had a guy, a cowboy comedy act, do a mic drop with a Sennheiser 2000 hand held with the 965 condenser capsule.

I sent it back to Sennheiser for evaluation and replacement of the capsule. They said it didn't need any work to the actual mic, but I had them charge me a full evaluation fee so we could bill it to the show. Billed the show about $250 for the replacement capsule and evaluation iirc. That show hasn't been back.
