Thanks to everyone's who chimed in so far. I'll report on the directions I'm heading. It does look like I'll stick with a 2-track recorder for now.

Be warned though that the internal clock loses time; I have to reset the clock monthly because it runs slow and ends up a few minutes behind every few months, which of course means scheduled recordings don't start recording quite when you expect them to...
Using NTP would fix this. It's in the manual:

Wow, thanks guys! That's what I get for not reading the manually thoroughly. I had no idea NTP was even a thing.  Too bad Denon never responded to my direct emails to customer support about this issue; but thankful for such an awesome forum, where we can learn from each other.
