custom snake
« on: March 06, 2018, 06:01:49 PM »

Hi, all.

Looking at an install and possibly getting a custom snake made.
I'm looking at two different uses;  small solo/duo acts using an analog board or larger acts using a digital board.
I envision an 8ch or 10ch x 4ret analog snake plus two CAT cables, which can be separate or included.
It will be buried in a pipe as it's outdoors.

I want good quality, and the venue is generally willing to pay for it.

Any thoughts, recommendations?

Thanks! Dave

I have used CBI custom stuff, and love it.  I work with a few bands that also have CBI ear splitter snakes.  All hand made, I personally think they are quality made.  I like them so much, I became a dealer.

Rapco, Whirlwind, CBI all make quality custom snakes. You can specify what you need and get it quoted.

The manufacturers have been covered well but my thoughts on what is to be buried:

12 pair/4 returns minimum and at least 4 Cat cables.  They get eaten up fast, especially if you have multiple desks or redundant networks.  Also you may want to throw a DMX line or two in there if lighting is in play, I know many smaller touring shows have a floor package these days looking for a guest line.

Don't forget a couple pull lines!

John,,

Make it bigger than you think you need!!! I'll bet it will be cheaper in the short and long run. and, someday, it will be needed.

Depending in the install cable routing you may need to just get bulk cable and finish the termination on site after the cable has been ran.

+1 regarding extra cat lines. You can break them out to use them for analog audio/AES/DMX/etc, digital snakes, network control, etc. We're pretty much all cat based at this point in our snake inventory, then just prep the necessary breakouts for their specific use on the gig.

I would get extra ins/outs for future events. Cat5/6 for devices and DMX as well. Maybe think of power as well for FOH so everything is grounded together.

To build on this, have you considered running only Cat6 lines (but, say, eight of them)? Today, you can break out four of them to XLR using off-the-shelf parts to give you a 12x4 analogue snake, and tomorrow you can use them for something else, with total flexibility.

(At that point, since its being buried in a pipe anyway, you might not even need a snake, per se, just run a bunch of Cat6.)
