Hey gang,

A venue I work with wants to be able to record live multi-tracks of the shows. The current provider is using an Onyx 1640i and a Mac with Logic Pro X. The Mackie Onyx is Firewire interface, which pretty much rules out a Windows computer. Since a dedicated recording computer is already available, I'd like to go with something with USB.

USB interface is the one thing I don't want to be talked out of.

I have experience with a Soundcraft Impact, and this would probably be my first choice, but I am looking for less expensive alternatives. The Impact is $2k-ish. I am not aware of any lower priced Soundcraft digital mixers with a Multi-Track interface

Soundcraft makes the Signature 22MTK, which is only $800, but for this kind of money, why not just get a Behringer X32 Rack?

This is for a performance venue that runs multiple stages for summertime festivals, so any additional utility would be welcome. This makes the X32 rack very attractive, since it can be used both with a stage box or as a stage box.

The non-mixer interface solutions, while less expensive, all seem kind of messy.

I use a A&H Qu-16 with an external HDD plugged into the qu-drive port, record the show, then save the track files on my computer and load them into my daw of choice

The Allen-Heath QU series does great multitracking.
I use the QU16. It takes some time to learn it, and only the best USB flash drives are compatible for multitracking, but the results are undeniable.

Consider the Ui24.  Around $1k.
It's a stagebox style remote mixer, but it has easy usb recording and playback.  Plug in a stick and go.
LOTS of other nice features.

I have used the QU-16 and Midas M32R with a PC and USB to multi-track at our venue. No complaints with either. We turn the tracks over to a college radio station, they edit and broadcast. For this function I really don't see a difference in units.
Rack may be a great option. Look at the Allen and Heath QU-SB if you are thinking rack, just another great option.

The Ui24 seems to have the capacity to plug in a Monitor/Keyboard/Mouse directly.

The QSC TouchMix 30 Pro has the functionality I am looking for and a pile of AUX mixes, plus the provider I spoke of in my original post just bought one.

i've had great experience with the X32 rack for recording. stable, easy to use. i use it with my band both for (in ear) monitors and recording of both rehearsels & live perfomances

One of the cool things about the Ui, is that it doesn't use an app.
Any device that has a web browser and wireless can operate it, phone, laptop, tablet from any manufacturer.

What flash drives are you using? I get a lot of errors unless I use the WD Passport Ultra USB hard drives

I've used Sandisk Extreme 500 SSD without issue for 16 tracks.
