Gate Help part II
« on: February 22, 2018, 06:54:51 PM »

Hey All,

First a shout out to Geert and Art for lending me a hand, Thank You. Thank You.

I called a friend of mine, a drummer, and asked him to come in and "tune" the drums while the drummer was at dinner.  Made a huge difference. It all starts at the source, doesn't it!!  The band is playing now and the drummer doesn't seem to have a clue. If he says something negative I can take the heat, but his girlfriend just told us how great they sound. I think we are in the clear.

Happy mixing to all.

If she tells him they sound great, he'll smile even if he thinks they suck. 8)

You've done good, Scott.

Many years ago a very talented person taught me to the drums.  When ever I provide Backline for a show, if the headliner insists on using their own kit rather than the Backline kit, they never sound as good as the openers.  Most drummers I've met can't tune their drums to sound good, they'd  prefer the bounce of a tight drum head rather than the sound of a properly tuned kit.  I highly recommend learning to tune drums.

Hey Ryan,

If you've got any resources you find good for drum tuning, I'd love to see.
I know the mechanics behind it - tap in different places on the rim, loosen the higher notes and tighten the lows until it's uniform - but I don't really know what to aim at overall. Do I want the minimum tension to get the wrinkles out of the skin, or more?
What do you do about the relative tunings of the top and bottom skins?

Cheers,
Chris
