Sub poles with threaded sub mount?
« on: February 09, 2018, 05:14:39 PM »

I have to wonder how something this simple can be so difficult to accomplish reliably but our stock of sub poles is disintegrating.  What are people using for this prosaic task?  I'm looking for simple adjustable length versions with the M20 thread at the bottom but don't need the crank up or gas assist versions.

My K&M poles have been pretty good. One of the knobs that pulls out the spring-loaded rod that locks the height came off and I had to drill, tap, and put in another machine screw, but other than that, works well.

K&M. I think there's been one failure out of six poles over 4-5 years, and that was a fairly cheap and easy fix.

Riley,

We had the same problem.  Burned through and stripped out On Stage Stands and several others.  I wanted a threaded version of an Ultimate TS80, but they don't make one.

However, what we found is it appears as though Ultimate Support OEM's one for JBL.  The JBL part is 'JBL POLE MA'.  Looks JUST like the top part of a TS80, and is equally strong and strip resistant.  Since switching to these, we've had zero problems.  (Aside from the bright orange JBL logo on the pole that won't come off - we're not a JBL house, but that's nothing a bit of carefully placed gaff tape won't cover up ;-) )

Hope that helps and glad to hear someone else was having the same problem we were.

Regards,
Brian

The K&M Distance Poles are most excellent.

The JBL poles appear to be made by K&M.

Make sure the pole section fits in the hole.  I remember trying some poles in the store and finding that they didn't fit in the hole (so the threaded section wouldn't mate)

I use the millennium m20 poles from Thomann. They are well made and a good price. What country are you in ?

The K&M poles with the expanding mandrel top are very nice because you can point the tops in the proper direction without having the top rotate to a different position.

Which model K&M do you suppose the JBL is modeled after? I'm not seeing an equivalent.

I use the K&M with the expanding mandrel. They were required for my 65 lb JBL tops. They seem to be holding up well, and I love the mandrel feature.

I have the 21340 Distance Rod with hand crank and Ring Lock.  It has a JBL sticker on it, but it's a K&M.

I also have the JBL SpeakerPole, Gas Assist Speaker Pole with M20 Thread. (MFR # JBLPOLE-GA)  Not sure who makes that for JBL.

Electro Voice ASP-58 I think is what you may be looking for. Threaded rod that is adjustable and doesn't have a bunch of bells and whistles.

If you google it you will find photos out there of them.

Pretty funny that four of the dead poles in our stock are the JBL branded poles that seem to be OEM by K&M.    The EVs seem to be the same OEM design.  The spring loaded pin disintegrated as soon as anyone pulled the knob with a load on the pole.  Hopefully the newer ones have resolved that.   Thanks for all the recommendations.

Who would want to do that?  >:(
Seems like an unforeseen safety feature. ;)

edit: If they are K&M, you can order replacement locking bolts. Probably K&M part 6.21460.5.00, at about 10-12 usd.

They need to be smarter than the pole.

Nope.  Good industrial design has the pin that shouldn’t move under load simply not move.  Bad industrial design has the pin knob come off in your hand while the pin and spring go flying off into the darkness.

They need to be smarter than the pole.
