Well, there's no room in the amp itself at all, they packed it tight ;)  A colostomy bag style cap would probably not be a good idea for a "portable" amp  ;D
If it comes down to it Greg, how would you feel about a "colostomy bag" secured via multiple, three or four,  Panduit Ty-Wraps to Panduit bolt-down Ty-Wrap mounts bolted to the rear rails, and / or internal side panels, of your rack?  Surely you could drill or punch a grommetted exit hole on one side or the other of the amp's chassis?  I'm suggesting this may be a better alternative to installing an aging, used, near death, capacitor.  Better a brand new cap on a 'buy once / cry once / install once basis.

Ah Ron, it's been a long time since I've been on the LAB and I do miss your posts :) These amps are old and not worth the toil for such mods in my opinion. When they start to really die off, I'm going to bite the bullet and replace my 280 lb. amp racks with 30lb. powersoft X4s. For now I have enough spares. But I wanted to get this one back in service for a while longer if possible.

If you are lifting them  yourself, time for an upgrade... the modern stuff is sweeeeet.

Agreed. Dave Rat was telling me I could theoretically power 16 Rat traps off of one X4, but the output would drop a bit. So no more than 8 boxes for full output ;) 2x 30lb. amps replace almost 600lb. of amps does sound rather attractive. And with all that built in processing and load monitoring too.

If all else fail you can parallel multiple smaller caps to achieve the aggregate capacitance.

Digikey doesn't have anything close.

This cap is only 2" diameter and about 4 1/16" tall. It's pretty compact for it's capacitance and voltage

So what about

and

All from Digikey?

Took more time to write this than to type digikey into google and search for them. Filters were 70-150 volts, 30000-45000 uf, in stock only. 12 choices, look at the dimensions, done.

If you can't find a good fit at Digikey you're probably screwed, but you might try Allied, Newark, and Mouser. Allied has a lot of stuff and they deliver it reliably but their search function is terrible. Good luck.  --Frank

All of your 8001 caps are probably from same manufacturer w/similar batch years. Time to face end-of-life reality. This will not be the only one to go...

Thanks Ed. When I originally searched, I was looking for identical capacitance/voltage/temp. Some questions, will additional capacitance have an adverse affect relative to the original amp PSU design? Would mixing a different/larger capacitance cap with the older ones have an adverse affect? Should all be replaced and matched? Seems like that would be the case.

Thanks,
Greg

Scratch that Ed. I overlooked that I work in a building full of EEs developing gear for the broadcast TV industry at my day job. I forget that some of them might know something about basic circuit design since we're mostly doing FPGA and digital circuit design ;) Words is: extra capacitance is fine and replace all caps at once.

Cheers,
Greg
