Creative Ideas
« Reply #40 on: January 21, 2018, 04:18:54 PM »

I just can't see it being practical.
It would be better if there was a standard measurement standard that all manufacturers had to follow.
That way, comparisons would be more accurate.

Most new ideas are not practical.
You are welcome to post ideas of your own.

And most "new" ideas aren't.  What we can hope for are new applications, new ways of using and implementing the old ideas.  Physics hasn't changed in a Very Long Time but we have engineers, designers and inventors coming up with new ways to apply that Very Old Physics.  Christian Heil didn't invent the line array, he came up with a way of making the HF and mids work together vertically; vertical columnar arrays had existed 60 years before he published his waveguide paper.

Your concept about laser aiming (and Dave's concept in http://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/topic,166110.msg1531787.html#msg1531787) was kicked around on a much earlier version of the LAB - maybe 12-14 years ago.  The ideas are still valid; IIRC that the consensus back then was the folks that lasers would most help are the least likely to pay extra for the feature (and we had laser/clinometer combos for line arrays back then, too).

As JR points out from time to time the low-hanging fruit was picked long ago.  Are we drying it, canning it, or making pies (or weaponized holiday fruit cakes)?

The value in your bringing it up for discussion is how it might trip someones trigger to apply it to a different product or for a different purpose.  Yes, you too can be a Muse!  :D

Have fun, good luck.

How many times? Who cares! Every time I see a post on this subject, I see new and different POVs
Just because you hear" last honest man...etc" doesn't mean there isn't good info to people who may not have read older posts.
Actual users are helpful, no question, but it is still appalling how little the consumers grasp even basic speaker info!
I told you it made people angry, or maybe that's just me who makes people angry.  ::)

relax and carry on...

I've been trying to get Ivan to write a white paper for the WWW with all his pearls of specification wisdom for years.

No there is still fruit out there, and people whose day job it is to think of stuff like that.

The specific idea of attaching a laser to a speaker cabinet, may still be impractical, but not as crazy as when somebody first thought about it (and probably did it).

I recall working with a laser back in the late 60's when I was helping my brother do experiments for his doctoral thesis...  He was pointing a then pretty rare and very expensive laser into a stream of supersaturated steam to estimate  the droplet size... Back in the 60's you would be laughed out of the room for suggesting to hang a laser on every speaker just to point them, but who knows, at some point in this century they may become so cheap that it is a merchantable feature.

Nowadays they stick actual computers (DSP) inside sound systems, so who knows what will be affordable?

So tell us, JR, what was it like before dirt was invented?  :D :D :D

As the saying goes "The ancients keep stealing our inventions".

Or, if you think you have invented something, go look it up in Olsons book.

A lot of "things" have been known for a long time.  But in many cases, a way to implement them or make the work has been a bit elusive.

Some of the new "inventions" are basically refinements and figuring out all the little details.

Just like Leonardo had ideas for all sorts of things (helicopter,  tank etc, he lacked  some aspects (like engines) to actually make them work.  As time goes on, new technologies/ideas allow these ideas to become reality.

Or Leonardo was a time traveller and just drew pictures of things he saw.   ::)

So, when the technology is mature enough, perhaps a laser that "sweeps" or "paints" an area corresponding to the speakers response at the freqency of the test tone currently being Bluetoothed to said speaker?

A laser is so last century... probably some radar scheme.
