Hammond M3 for $1 on Craigslist

Wow, and they pulled the tubes since they're worth more than the console.

Nice organ. A mellower sound than a B3/C3. I used to have one in the basement in mint condition but never had a Leslie hooked up to it. Sold it years ago.

I think that's the model they used on A Whiter Shade of Pale and some early Pink Floyd trax.

I have a 1955 M3.  No reverb.  Wouldn't mind pulling the tank out of that one.  I have it run though a Boss reverb pedal into a Motion Sound Pro 3.  Don't have space for a full sized organ.  The spinet doesn't go as low (unless you do a mod to hook the bass pedals to the lower manual, on my to do list) and doesn't have foldback in the top octave.  But I've never played an electronic keyboard that had the same feel or sound.  I wonder if this was seized up or they just decided to trash it.

I just picked up a free M3 last week, and I was going to chop it, add the foldback to the top manual, lower the bottom manual by an octave via the bass pedal tone wheels, and use the built-in 15-watt amplifier to drive a small passive Leslie. I might pick this one up just for the reverb tank and deep-6 the rest of it.

And I think that's the model Keith Emerson jabbed the knives into.

I think he used a Hammond L100 rather than an M3, but they're very similar. Yes, I saw him stab it and stick a sword through it a few times on stage. Us keyboard players can't let the guitarists have ALL the fun.

There's a John Hiatt song (and I think album title), Perfectly Good Guitar.

"Who do those rock stars think they are,
Smashing a perfectly good guitar."

Sounds like a project.  Be interesting to see how it comes out.  I need to tear into mine but having it all over the place for a couple weeks... ::)

I really like the Pro3.  The built in overdrive gives me that Emerson/Lord sound.  It sounds a bit artificial with a synth but with the slight dirt from the Hammond it's awesome.  I did the pick off from the speaker with a load resistor and so I can drive the internal amp a bit.

Mike - Didn't Jeff Scholz from Boston also use an M3 IIRC?

Boston's debut album had some of the most amazing organ work.

No, but TOM Sholz may have........
And yes, it was a great album.
