Crown XLS Series Amp Gain for UX8800
« on: January 08, 2018, 10:39:08 am »

Quick question that hopefully someone can answer easily. I recently added a EAW UX8800 and in setting up the greybox input settings on EAWPilot I need the amp gain for my Crown amps I'll be using for this system. I'll be using an XLS2500, XLS1500, and XLS1000 and I haven't been able to find the gain anywhere on the specs on this series of Crown amps. I even have the service manual, and it's not entirely clear from that document either. Does anyone know the gain for these amps?

The amp max voltage is also required, but it seems that is automatically calculated once the gain, wattage, and impedance is entered. Thanks for any help!

So, Crown do it slightly differently, and give you the Input Sensitivity (that is, the voltage required at the input to generate full output) rather than the gain, you need a bit of arithmetic to convert one to the other.

The arithmetic is Gain (in dB) = 20*log10(Vmax/Vsens), where Vmax is the maximum output voltage (calculated from the power and impedance) and Vsens is that input sensitivity voltage. Vmax = sqrt(P4r*4) where P4r is the power output at 4Ohms, that being the value Crown have said their sensitivity figure relates to.

If that sounds too complicated, well some would say you shouldn't be trying to set up a processor in the first place  ;).

But, as I ran through the math myself to double check I had the calculations the right way round here you are:

Power @ 4 Ohms           Vmax         Gain
XLS1000             350           37.4           28.5
XLS1500             525           45.8           30.3
XLS2000             650           51.0           31.2
XLS2500             775           55.7           32.0

HTH,
David.

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it. Crown also replied to my inquiry while I posted on here with very similar numbers. Here is what Crown provided, in case it's helpful to anyone else searching:

XLS1002               29.12 dB
XLS1502               30.88 dB
XLS2002               31.91 dB
XLS2502               32.64 dB

These are the same for the older model as well (e.g. XLS1000, XLS1500, etc.). Thanks for your help!
