I recently realized a Shure SB900 lithium cell (750mAh) fits in an Xbox controller. Then I realized Xbox controller lithium cells are going for around $10. They're comparable  in capacity and in a nearly identical dual AA sled form factor.

I'm thinking of testing a couple. I expect that without the microcontroller in the Shure cells, the Li-curve battery gauge would not be accurate, but 10 hours run time for $10, could be worth it to keep a pile of spares around.
