1/4 wave antennas on Sennheiser wireless mic receivers
« on: December 12, 2017, 10:43:57 AM »

I have a damaged 1/4  wave antenna on my Senn XSW12 wireless system. Is the antenna interchangeable with one from a Shure wireless system (SLX) just because the BNC connectors are identical and will lock in place? Are there any frequency constraints associated with different Senn or Shure products that inhibit interchangeability of the antennas?

Just looking for a cost effective option to buying a brand new replacement antenna.....

You can interchange but only antenna for the same frequency range.

Receiver antenna matching (ie antenna length) is far less critical than transmitter antenna matching.

On a bad day, just cut about the right length off a bnc coax lead then strip the braid away.

On a bad day, just cut about the right length off a bnc coax lead then strip the braid away.

If you're going to that kind of trouble, rather than removing the braid you can unwind it from the dielectric and point 180 degrees opposite the cable's core conductor (and, ideally, both 90 degrees away from the unadulterated rest of the cable). At least that way you'll end up with something approximating a dipole...

(For a demonstration of this, check out this Youtube video from Lectrosonics.)

FWIW I think that the Shure 1/2 wave antennas (comes with ULX and better) are much nicer than the Sennheiser ones.

I hate the ones that came with my ULX. Not enough friction at the BNC to let you set it at 45 degrees.
I have tried using rubber bands wrapped around the bnc but they don’t last long.

Rob,
Shure sends little washers with the antennas, that are intended to add a bit of friction to the connection. Are you using those? These washers are easily misplaced, and no instruction is given to their use.

I had no idea!
I will look for them in the future.
