A quick aside on the subject of NCVT, I have often complained about my cheapo NCVT being so sensitive it was almost unusable, but recently when working on my hot water heater it barely registered on the 240V drop... I suspect the water was hot so the heater wasn't drawing much current but I was surprised by the low registration. In hindsight the heater is powered by two legs of opposite polarity 120V so perhaps a first order cancellation of the electrostatic/magnetic field?

It registered if the tip of the NCVT was right up against the 240V feed wire. So It was good enough to identify the correct breaker, but not what I expected.
