Recording to MacBook Pro from sc48
« on: November 10, 2017, 08:01:17 AM »

I have a date on Sunday and the client would like to record it.  Unfortunately there is a PM5 at foh, but they do have a SC48 with FireWire option card at monitor position.  I have a 2014 MacBook Pro which is loaded with my pro tools 12.6 HD.  What I don’t know is whether I need to install a specific driver for this or is that included with pro tools HD driver and it is only a case of plug and play.

You need to download the fw driver off avids website.

Also make sure you have the correct FireWire cable.

I cannot quite recall the exact drivers, but I do remember that...
a) The Avid site did not clearly lead you to the required drivers without first googling the procedure and then searching their website for the correct drivers.
b) There is a second driver that you require to update on the board itself.

I do remember it being a bit of a PITA process. The good news is that it was solid once it was up and running. The bad news is that the depth of those pre amps is pretty ordinary.

Item b) might be worth advancing, because it's a one-time update and there's a good chance it has already been done.  What it did was expand the firewire output from 18 to 32 (I'm not 100% sure of these numbers, but something like that) channels.  You can verify that by just going to the patch screen and counting ProTools outputs.

Why would anyone want to record a date?

drivers here:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/download/en435951

Hope you're charging a fee for this. what are you using for a data drive to record to, and what backup drive do you have?

Slightly O/T, but BackBlaze is a great option to back up all the drives you have - 1 price per month all you can store, no matter how many drives or how many terabytes. Godsend for audio, Photoshop and video folks.

Ned,  Have you checked the pricing on Amazon Glacier?  https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/pricing/

Scott - thanks for the suggestion. I just checked it and was surprised that Amazon's more expensive.

Glacier West coast is $0.005 per GB; For 9TB of storage (without retrieval) is $45 a month.

Backblaze is $5 a month, $50 a year unlimited data. And no retrieval fees.
