Shure Wireless Mic compatibility
« on: November 04, 2017, 05:27:35 pm »

Hey guys, my church has been using a few Shure PGX2 SM58 wireless mics for a long while now and one has started to cut out of sound. The transmitter still picks up and shows like its getting sound but it isn't sending the sound to my mixer for some reason, its sporadic and will sometimes come back but its very loud and annoying when it does. I'm pretty sure its the mic itself but not sure. My main question is are Shure PGX2 and are Shure PGXD-2 Mics interchangeable with the transmitter? trying to avoid buying both. Thanks!

No, the transmitters and receivers are not compatible between PGX and PGXD.

Hi Jack, if your mics are in a range above 600 MHz you are going to have to replace them soon anyway. That said, I would try swapping transmitters and receivers around to isolate the problem. From your description, it sounds like it may not be an RF issue, but more on the lines of a broken jack on the output of the receiver.

Is there a squelch control on the receiver? If so, you might try adjusting that.

The squelch mutes the output when the RF signal strength drops below the squelch threshold. Reducing the squelch can prevent dropouts at the risk of hearing static.

To improve the signal strength, you may need to move the receiver closer to the transmitter. Human bodies are pretty effective RF shields, and if you have a crowd between the transmitter and receiver, you can have signal dropouts.

The microphone is the transmitter.  The base is the receiver.   Are these on legal frequencies?  If not not might be a good time to update.  I don't believe  these are frequency agile so  I don't have any troubleshooting  tips.

I am sure more will chime in.

The PGX series are frequency agile however there are too many variables to know what could possibly be causing the problem, however should it need to be repaired it would probably be better to replace it.

I would however recommend the QLX series in-stead of the PGX-D series.
