Windows NT was based on Os/2 and/or vice verse. Then microsoft didn’t renew the collaboration with IBM. To bad, because I really liked os/2.

The original idea was to use BeOS as the base for osx, but the creators didn’t think that they got enough money so Jobs brought over NeXTSTEP instead. I was a hard core fan of BeOS.

Is it only me seeing a pattern here... ;-)

Agreed. Apple is trying to turn OSX into IOSxxx. I don't want my computers acting like an iPhone.

Been an Apple user all my life but my next computer might be a Windoze machine.

Do any of you remember DESQVIEW/x ?  It was heaven for us *nix nerds as it has an x-server and you could run x-apps on your PC from your sparc server.

The most money I ever borrowed personally in my life was to buy an SGI Iris Indigo over 30k in 1993.  I was in the middle of a huge development project and convinced myself this would make me more productive.  Now that SS age is single digit math I wish I had the 30k back.  The genlocker was cool too buy my Amiga/Toaster did that.

So do we remember Amiga OS, Deskview X, IRIX, Non-stop UX ?

Windows became usable for me when Windows for Workgroups came out in 94 with the first 32 bit disk, graphics and network stack.  It was a taste of the NT 4.0 kernel.  As soon as 4.0 came out never looked back.   

On the CPU side by 1999 I had two behemoth quad PII Xeon machines and some simple scripts that broke the build up and then put it back together.  Builds were now a 10 hour process.

Dennis - Did you work in Alpharetta for DEC? 

At the paging company in the late 80's we have a VMS cluster with Xyplex terminal servers at each office.  I was an RF tech, not involved in the admin of that system, just a user.

I went there for training near the end of my stay.  I was a FS tech that grew up on PDP8s, then 11s, VAX, and Alpha.  Compaq swallowed DEC, then HP swallowed Compaq.  DEC then disappeared, along with me.  The clusters were a blast to work on.

That was a fun read. I didn’t know about this and I used to work on vax/vms computers. It brings up the nostalgic in me...
