Tim will be passing these out at his next gig

Sounds like a 'first world' problem.  There are kids going to bed without consoles and you're having issues with mute v. on?

Nope, on is off and off is on is not a good basis for user interface design.  I "grew up" on Soundcrafts too and those all had Channel On buttons with green LEDs.  Of course I'm talking about the old 400 and 800 consoles in the early 80s.

How about the tiny bus cue and mute buttons next to each other?  First time I did mons on a 400 I muted mixes inadvertently more than once.

Mute and PFL as neighbors can also be interesting.

Modern equivalent.  QL5 dismiss popup screen is in the same spot as the on/off off for the gate on the home screen.  I did an accidental double tap and it cut off the presenters mic. :-X

Many years ago I bought a used, fairly high-end, board.  When I first received the board and started checking it out, one of the first things I noticed was a bunch of "NO" buttons.  I was thinking what the heck is a "NO" button!!! :o  Then I noticed the same location buttons on other channel strips were "ON" buttons.  (the "NO" buttons were "ON" buttons installed upside-down).

Not in the same league but I thought it funny that a cheap little mixer like the Studiomaster Digilive 16 mentioned in another thread on this site uses both "mute" and "on" together on their console. When you see it, you then ask yourself why this simple feature is not a user preference on all consoles. : )

With a back lit button it still isn't immediately obvious whether the light represents mute active, or channel playing. They reversed out the legend behind ON so that looks like they mean that light means ON... and dark means mute...

Better but still a source of confusion for people expecting mute lights. At least they recognize the confusion surrounding that and tried.

Even more confusing... I believe the dLive uses On/Off to toggle whether a channel is sent to a mix, group or L/R, and MUTE to mute the channel.
