Mixers with "On" instead of "Mute." Exclusive to Yamaha?
« on: October 17, 2017, 05:21:02 AM »

I'm looking for a mixer with "On" instead of "Mute." I've only seen this on Yamaha mixers but I would like to find something cheaper if possible. Did Yamaha pioneer this reversal of the standard? It would seem that they were brave, but I really like it.

The x32 can be switched to this standard.

I think that this is a broadcast ‘standard’ so you might find this on radio station mixers and similar.

Soundcraft also tend to be like this, certainly the expression and VI1 that I often use.

So the "mute" button simply becomes an "On?" That could be confusing.

Actually, I had a feeling that this was the case. Its interesting that this difference exists between broadcast and the rest. I always found the "mute" to be a curious concept, because its activating a control which serves to DEactivate something!

It's like a clutch on a car.
When you take your foot off the pedal, you are activating the "clutch" mechanism :)

There is no "standard". It is what the silkscreened graphics say, and  the perceived sophistication of likely operators. This is why some Yamaha products light-on = channel on and some light-on = channel mute.

I've been burned by this: 18 hour day on one Show A with PM5D where light-on =Mute =Off. Fly out. No sleep. New show. Show B. Another 18 hour day. M7CL. Light-on = Off. AND the color differences are orange v. red, not something universal like green v. red. Eeeesh! The only "standard" is there is no standard.

I have found Mix Wizards both ways too.

This seems a pretty arbitrary reason to select a console based upon.

M7 follows the Yamaha convention of "On" light = channel On.

I prefer the Yamaha methodology of "On" rather than "Mute" and also their use of dBFS instead of the opaque and arbitrary "+dB" concept of many digital mixers trying to emulate analog systems and the corresponding bad user behavior, but I agree with JR that they are not enough reason to pay premium Yamaha prices relative to less expensive and often more capable offerings from other brands (A&H GLD/DLive, among others).

Steve.

I think it was the earlier Mix Wizards that
were channel on light on with a green LED
