Com headset?
« on: October 16, 2017, 11:58:51 PM »

I am looking to buy a personal headset for com.  I did some googling and reading old posts here but most of them are 10 years old and products mentioned are out of production.

Our house system is an older Clearcom setup.  Normally I grab one of the lightweights but on the last gig I did not set com and ended up spending 12 hours in one of the old head-clamps.  So I'm going to buy one.  Looking at medium to light weight that can flip left or right ear as the day goes on.  This is for corporate and if I have to mix with them on it's not going to be a band.

It looks like the current contenders in the just under $200 range are Clearcom CC-26k, Telex PH-88, or Shure BRH31M.  That last one I can't find much on line about.

At 1/2 the price we have Pro Intercom SMH710 Even lower some Eartec that I assume I will have to put a new end on or even provide power for.

The advantage to the low cost ones is it's not as big a problem if it gets stolen.  I like rugged but these will live in my locker at work.

I am also considering getting my own belt pack so I can adjust side tone lower for my self.  Maybe modifying it so I don't need a screwdriver. Pro Intercom BP1 or BP2 perhaps?

Thank you.

Tom;  I purchased an original ClearCom CC26 long before they added the K.  It's been my personal use headset.  In ALL those years, I've had to replace the foam earmuff once as it was perishing.  The Canadian ClearCom distributor had the muff in stock, cheap as dirt.  I wouldn't describe it as durable, but for my personal use, it's been a great choice.  I'm in a retirement home now but I still own the same CC-26 in storage in a friend's home.  I purchased it somewhere in the late 1980's and never regretted it.  For me, it was very much a buy once / cry once item.  I've installed Production Intercom packs but never owned one personally.  My personal pack is one of ClearCom's white plastic packs.

Just had a chance to look at all the headsets at work. The best feeling ones look like cc-26k but they don't have any markings other than the clearcom logo.

I'm a bit of an over the top comms nerd, so i've tried a LOT of different headsets.  The CC-26k is the first one that i thought hit all the right points for a corpy headset and was actually really durable [i've yet to find a broken one, which is saying something considering how they usually get treated].

But they are kinda stupid expensive for what they are.

If you can swing the funds, buy one of those.  If you really can't drop 200 bucks on this, DM me and i can probably hook you up with something.  i have a stupid amount of comms stuff lying around considering i don't own a comms company.  :)

Thanks Brian.  Between the comments here and having used it at work I am going to order the CC-26k.  Less than $200 for something that I will use that often is not a big deal.  Now I just need to figure out the best way to mark it.

I think for a pack I will just keep my eyes out for a used one.

Why would you buy a belt Pack? There are at least 3 non-compatible comm systems I run into regularly. All you need is the headset wired for the system you use most, and the appropriate 4 pin turnaround for packs with the other gender.

I have a house gig where I am on the same kind of system every show, pulling from the same set of packs, on the same infrastructure.  Unfortunately it seams every other event I get a pack that has the side tone set to stun or the pack has some other problem.  I try to take the bad packs out of circulation or repair them but I only have so much time.

The side tone problem is tough as we have lots of packs and a couple of matrix systems in our house infrastructure.  While I DO carry a tweeker with me to adjust various things I don't always have time to fine tune my com pack.  My desire for a personal pack is just so I can keep it in good repair as well as modify the side tone to be a little more convenient.  Most of the AV techs I deal with have no clue about such things.

It boils down to comfortable personal head set, priceless.  Personal modded belt-pack with easy side tone, I can wait for a used something to show up.

Why don't you just put a p-touch label or something on one of the beltpacks?  That would designate it as yours without having to buy one.  If you did buy one I would get a Clearcom 701.

I'm good with a Telex Ph88 and a 4 pin turn around from from Audiopile.

I have been using a Motorola 53863 headset for years for corporate work.
Replaced the connector with an XLR 4 pin.
It requires phantom power so I carry a Production Intercom PB1.5.
Effective, comfortable and compact.
NOTE: not suitable for loud environments.

Do you ever talk, or do you just listen?

An alternative might be to separate the com audio and run it into an unused input so you can use your favorite headphones/earbuds, while also being able to PFL stuff.

I run almost every position and often have to relay clients request. I ordered the cc26k.  I have one on my current show and like it.

The SM710s are comfy and sound good but the plastic headband breaks easily.  Plan on buying several if you go that route.
