worst gear ever?
« on: October 02, 2017, 10:19:46 am »

Hey Mods,

Can we have a listing of what some of us think the worst stuff we have ever used was?  Or would that get us in trouble?

Cause I have a few things.  Buy once, cry once.

Why ask for permission when this issue doesn't seem to stop all the people that constantly bash Bose.

Bose- better sound through litigation.

The worst stuff I ever used was some ditch weed back in '68.  Gave me a 3-day headache.

It was not unusual to lace psychedelics with sundry household chemicals to experiment with effectiveness, often dismal failures.

Worst stuff I recall was some low grade weed sold around Ft Riley KS that we called "rope", because they planted hemp to make rope there to support WWII effort, and that is likely what they were selling.

I prefer to forget the worst gear ever....  Let it rest in pieces.

Yeah, the Marijuana Tax Stamp Act pretty much killed the domestic hemp-growing industry, leading the US to import hemp fiber for rope/cordage.  Then WWII came along and the US was cut off from it's Filipino suppliers ("Manilla" rope, anyone?); the tax stamp was waived for the duration of the war and hemp plantations were created in a number of states, including Kansas.  Rumor has it some of the generational offspring of those are still... uh... growing.

Junction City, KS remains a fetid hole, JR.  I don't think it's mentality has changed since you were at Ft Riley.

edit ps... we went from discussing the worst gear to the worst cannabis in about 6 posts... that might be a record of some kind.  Is cannabis quality a social issue?

Summing amps overloaded with 2 hot channels.
What a joy to drive that hunk of shit.
Every time at that club, another strip or 2 was dead.
When it got down to 8 working strips, I sold them my backup Yammi 2404

Heard a couple of Ross PA speakers, and was far less than impressed.
Similar Peavey's kicked their ass.

Inexpensive microphones with poor isolation. Sound quality is useless if you hear every movement. That's why I don't buy microphones from Radio Shack anymore. Actually, I don't buy anything from Radio Shack anymore, since they turned into just another cell phone store. I take that back; a few months back I bought a bluetooth earpiece for my cell phone from the local Radio Shack at their going out of business sale.

Inexpensive mixers with "wall wart" power supplies that fry if they aren't connected to a load. I'm looking at you, Behringer. It's not really your bad design, it's your poor choice of a third party power supply with a bad design.

Gooseneck microphone stands. If I want to hear a duck quack, I'll go out to the pond. (Except Atlas. Atlas is the quietest. Not silent, but the quietest.)

"Precision" screwdriver sets. Those ones with the black shafts and fluted chrome handles. The black shafts seem to be made of dry spaghetti noodles. Any brand; they are all brands you never heard of if they are branded at all. (If you want decent micro screwdrivers, they are available, but not with black shafts and fluted chrome handles.)

Any hand crank egg beaters made in the last 30 years. The gears are made of plastic and they skip easily. If you see a vintage Ecko Best egg beater at the resale shop, snag it.

I am pleased to share that I never visited Junction City (too many lifers lived there). I lived off base (without permission) in Manhattan, KS, a small college town that was far more compatible with my mental state.

Even though I didn't have a car out there, hitchhiking to FT Riley at 5 AM when thousands of GIs are all going to the same place (Custer Hill) was reasonably reliable.

MJ is relatively harmless but between legalized smoke and internet porn a whole generation of millennials will never leave their parent's basement, unless they get the munchies.

Nady 12 monitors I once had. Feedback anywhere anytime.
Bargain goosenecks (meaning, not Atlas).
