"Ten of the Greatest PA Amps Ever"
« on: September 27, 2017, 11:29:06 PM »

I'm off sick today, killing time with Youtube, and come across "10 of the Greatest Diesel Engines Ever". I'm only mildly interested in engines, and as usual the comments are where the real action is. Plenty of heated debate for those into such things.

Anyway, it got me thinking, what should be on our list of "Ten of the Greatest PA Amps Ever"? Allow me to start the list with an obvious suggestion, the Peavey CS-800.

Carver PM1.5 - Broke ground in weight and power output and ushered in a whole new class of switching power supplies.  With a few mods was good enough for Clair to put their name on it.

1. Bogen Challenger

2. Shure Vocal Master

These did for PA in the 50's and 60's what digital has done for PA today.

The venerable Crown DC-300 was a staple for years.

WEM 100w Slave Amplifier - Powered the original Isle of Wight festivals, Rolling Stones in the Park, etc. Plus bands such as Pink Floyd and The Who owned them for their own touring rigs.  In fact, The PA for the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival was everything Charlie Watkins had in the shop plus The Who's PA.

Crown Macro-Tech 3600.
I never liked the 3600.  It would "run out of gas" to soon on fast double kicks.

The 2400 and 5000s were much better (in my opinion)

I used a bunch of PM1.5s.

I really liked them, but they had HORRIBLE pin 1 problems and could not drive my Servodrive SDL5s at all without overheating.

Don't forget about the Crest 8001.

The first "monster amp".  I have serial number 001 in my amp collection.
