Searching for a Rabbit a Hole.
« on: September 24, 2017, 08:20:27 pm »

One of my annual customers will be very well served to install a Rabhit Hole in a wall.  I gave been searching for hours but can't find anything that will work well.

Wall is 2x4 construction with drywall on one side and the exterior is T1-11.

A 6"x 6" would be fine but could be larger if that's all we can find.  Preferably has a keyed locking mechanism but not mandatory.

Any links would be much appreciated.

Thanks Ryan

I'm unfamiliar with the term rabbit hole as you seem to be using it.  Is there another name it's known by?  My best guess is you're looking for an access panel or maybe some sort of passage through the wall.

I've always heard it referred to as a "mouse hole". Yes, it is a way to run cable through a wall.

How about something like this:

http://karpinc.com/index.php/access-doors/non-rated/exterior/exposed-flanges

Locking, insulated, weather-tight, designed for exterrior use.  Could use a matching fire rated one on the inside.

Thanks for this link, it's exactly what I have been looking for.  As Mac mentioned, I have heard then referred to as a mouse hoke also but I hear the term Rabbit Hole in my area a lot more.

I like to think it's a rabbit hole if you encounter a little girl, a Cheshire cat & hookah, and giant mushrooms.

I've accomplished this in the past with large ABS sewer pipe through the wall, and a cleanout plug on each side.  It's inherently weatherproof and if you need it to be insulated, stuff it full of fibreglass or Roxul.  It doesn't address the locking requirement, but the plug on the inside makes it difficult to open up unless you're inside already.
