Double ear headset microphone options?
« on: September 22, 2017, 11:34:14 AM »

So I'm looking at purchasing a double ear headset microphone for my buildings inventory. I currently have some WL185's and some E6's but, for some events making sure the E6's are secure before they get on stage has been an issue and some floppy microphones have happened.

I know Countryman makes the H6, so that's an option. But i'm wondering about other opinions on the DPA mics (I have no experience with their offerings), or other options out there.

Its mostly going to be used for speech, with not much singing. But I'm not looking to go cheap just because of that. I'd still like to buy a quality product.

I'm familiar with the Microphone Madness and Galaxy audio options. I'd like to go a step up from there.

Rode makes a pretty good, cost effective solution with the HS2

+1 for DPA.
d:fine 4066 is great if the user wish to put them on by themself.
Dual ear d:fine slim is really nice & comfy to wear, but you usually need someone to put the mic on the end user so the placement is spot on.

DPA headsets are great and you'll never get any complaints about them (other than the price  ;)). I have some D:Fine headsets in my inventory and they sound fantastic, they're very comfortable to wear, and they hold up well.

You should take a look at Point Source Audio. Their mics sound great and they're durable, and they're also waterproof. Price point is similar to Countryman but they sound much better (IMO). They're fairly new to the scene so they don't get a lot of attention yet, but they're starting to.

In the interest of full disclosure, I just became a Point Source dealer, although I haven't yet placed an opening order. I've used their mics in the past though and I was very impressed with the sound, durability and price point, but the fact that they're waterproof really sold me on them, especially for theatre work, and especially outdoors. I have DPA and Countryman through distributors, so I'm not a direct dealer, but I have a lot of production inventory from both companies.

Thanks everyone. I'll take a look at those Point Source, but I think I'm going to look at the 4066 as a possible solution. As long as the management is fine by the amount of beans they'll have to spend for their request.  ;D

I'm content with the Shure Beta 53 even though it looks kinda ugly/bulky.

+2 for the DPA d:fine we got ours from Mike Pyle, keep 2 in inventory.  Amazing for corporate "Ted" type talks.  A really easy upsell.

I have found a bit of nurses tape to keep them in ideal placement is best.

+1 for the Point Source Audio CO-8WD.  We just bought eight of them.  The positioning options are great.  You can even flip the two earclips in either direction so the boom can be on the left or on the right.  Very ingenious.

They also have a disconnectable pigtail for the connector so you can switch out to various WL connectors if you have more than one brand in your inventory.

Sound quality is great.  We switched over from Microphone Madness earsets and the PSA headsets sound much better (although not a fair comparison as they are also more expensive - I just state that as a point of reference for those familiar with MM product, which is definitely not bad).

So far we've been very happy.

I've also had some success with the Microphone Madness headsets.
http://www.microphonemadness.com/mm-dual-ear-psm-pro-series-dual-earset-microphone.html
They claim "As good as the Countryman E6 or your money back".
I did get a mailshot this week saying buy 5, get one free, but I can't see a reference to it on their site.
Also not sure if you can buy them over there, but i've recently been using the JAG (Just Audio Gear) headsets and they've been brilliant.

Sorry if resurrecting this thread bugs someone, but I have just been approved to purchase a half dozen dual ear headsets and am wondering if there any new additions to the list that have emerged and if there is anyone who has done a direct comparison of the Rode HS2 to anything. The cost of the Rode is about where I need it to be. Point Source at 500 is too high as is the DPA ( of which I am sitting on four 4088s with connector problems). My ideal would be a Shure MX153 with a dual ear clip. Love how they sound.
Thanks,
GG

I'd have had one by now, but they've obviously decided that Shure wireless systems aren't common enough - the HS2 is only available in 3.5mm jack. I don't like using big bulky adapters as they're just a recipe for getting bent when someone sits down.
For that price point though i'd definitely suggest looking at the JAG IMX6A if you can source them. I'm less sold on the cheaper IMX5A - just sounded a bit dull and lifeless and needed a lot of EQ to brighten up. The 6A sounds really nice though.
Alternatively i've also had good experiences with the Microphone Madness headsets.

Adam,

I found a nice little surprise to be the Audio Technica 892. It sounds really nice and the headsets are light and comfortable,  enough so that I've had people forget that they were wearing them. The only downside is that the mics themselves don't have a disconnect; the mics and cables are all one unit. I've used these for corporate and schools plays and have always been more than happy with the sound. I have Shure mx and Microphone Madness and you can definitely tell that the A. T's. are an upgrade over both of those. They run about $300 per unit, but if you look hard you can find them for about $250.
