TrippLite, what are you doing???
« on: September 18, 2017, 07:39:06 PM »

So, I was browsing Tripp-Lite's website, and I came across this power conditioner:

https://www.tripplite.com/2000W-230V-Power-Conditioner-Automatic-Voltage-Regulation-AVR-AC-Surge-Protection-6-Outlets-UNIPLUGINT-Adapter~LR2000

What's worrisome about it is that it has two NEMA 5-15R (ordinarily 120V nominal) with a 230V output. While it's labeled "230V" next to the receptacle, there is no explicit warning either on the device or in the manual that connecting a 120V appliance to this output could result in severe damage damage to the connected appliance, including fire.

So far, I've liked TrippLite's products, but this has me concerned.

Mike, do you have any contacts with TrippLite that could answer why they chose to put 230V on a receptacle form factor that is designed for 120V?

I do have a TrippLite contact, plus there's another product they make for the RV market that one of my readers claims can be "blown up" with swapped 120-volt hot-neutral polarity. I'll make a few calls to their engineering group and see what I can find out.

Scary stuff....

Is this even UL listed?  I see nothing in the documentation to indicate that it is, but I may be overlooking something.

Perhaps it's not intended for the North American market. Send it to Europe and hope that anything with a NEMA plug (which should have only been sold in the N.A. unless it's grey market) has a universal power supply?

That's what I suspect. But I'm going to ask Tripp-Lite for clarification.

I'm betting it's just pictures of the design mockup and the marketing dept simply hasn't updated the literature/website with pics of the current as-shipped product.

The specs specifically say that the output is 230V (no mention of 120V) AND that it has NEMA 5-15R sockets.

Quote
  • Ideal for computers, routers, modems and home theater components
  • Maintains regulated, selectable 240/220/208V nominal output
  • Protects against spikes with 1360 joules of surge suppression
  • Monitors power status with front-panel diagnostic LEDs
  • Features 6 rear outlets: 2 NEMA 5-15R, 2 NEMA 6-15R and 2 C13
