AES50 splitting
« on: September 10, 2017, 03:41:50 PM »

I'm familiar with how Dante sends a signal to multiple destinations by sending multiple copies, but how does it work with AES50 like with Midas or Behringer products?

Say I had an AES50 I/O preamp box. How would I send that signal to 4 mixers for example?

I believe that AES50 is a point to point protocol that just happens to use Category cable so these isn't a way to do this simply.

Really? That's surprising. If that's true then you'd think there must be splitter devices.

DL431.  Splits preamps to (2) consoles.  At the console, further splits are possible via Dante or other networked protocols.

The link between console(s) and preamps and the associated control implementation is arguably different than the needs of distributing multiple feeds to various pieces in a system.  Most manufacturers have chosen some flavor of point to point from pres to surface, then Dante or similar for the "audio system network" protocol.

Will Dante or some other protocol take over as the best way to get any audio signal to any device?  Possibly at some point, but it looks to be a ways out.

Coming from the CL and QL world with Dante as the main transport for the past few years, AES50 and others (D-snake) seems so...archaic.  My installs primarily focus on function, so it would take a whole lot to get me to give up Dante which makes life so simple.

We do a lot with Yamaha and Dante too.  When I talked with Midas and A&H about this topic (networked vs point to point) in depth, it was a few years back when Dante wasn't as sorted as it is now.  If it were as simple as Dante being "the" protocol, the dLive (for example) would likely have used it.  Look at the latency spec on dLive, is that possible yet via Dante?  How about control via Dante?  Those seem to be two issues that need to be fine tuned yet.

DL431 is way overkill.

So what if I have a DL16 and want to send the audio from those preamps to 10 M32 consoles? Would I need to put Dante cards in each console?

If you want point-to-multipoint then Dante would be the best(?) option.

Otherwise you can link the consoles using aes50 and feed each console that way.

How do you do that?

I've talked to a Midas engineer about doing this on X32 consoles for my live mixing seminars, and he said you can daisy-chain a dozen consoles via the AES50A and B connections, just like putting two of them together for a FOH/Monitor connection. However, you're still stuck with the first console setting the incoming preamp gain, and all other consoles doing a gain-trim for incoming level. Plus there will be additional clock and signal delays added as you get further down the daisy-chain. His recommendation was to put a Dante card in each console and not mess with the daisy-chain setup.
