It's hard to call getting hit by a major tropical storm as lucky.

The improved building standards (to survive cat 5) written after Hurricane Andrew trashed them in '92 seems to have made a difference.

Or you can do it like my house which was built in 57. All poured cinder block. Interior walls are metal mesh with cement plaster. No storm is knocking this place down. May take some chunks of roof, but guaranteed my little Florida block home will be here in another 50 years.

I'm hoping 50 years I'll be beach front at 70 miles inland. We'll see....

My buildings are at 108 feet above sea level, though downtown DeLand is about 68 feet, may have to sail part way to the club in 50 years  ;^).

Power was finally restored here at 5 pm,  the house (and shop) is now air conditioned again,  can start working off the dozen pounds I gained in the last week sitting around drinking, eating, reading and sweating.
