speakers turn off completely when I unmute a mic channel?
« on: August 22, 2017, 11:26:11 AM »

I recently started working as an AV tech at a church and they have an outdoor venue. Aside from all the other atrocities I see, it seems that when I unmute a channel on the yamaha digital mixing board, the speakers go completely out. We have speakers at the front of the venue and two more bose speakers in the rear that are connected to an amp and a behringer DSP. These bose speakers are the ones that go out. Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening? thanks so much

Please fix your user name so it is your first and last real name.  We will be able to answer you after that.

Thanks

perhaps amp protection circuitry reacting to the transient change.

do they come back on? or stay off?

Are your front speakers active with internal amplification?  What model speakers, amp, and DSP? It makes a difference.  We don't have enough information for serious troubleshooting.

I'm going to throw something out there just to be sure.  Yamaha consoles are backwards from most boards.  Most consoles have an illuminated mute or "off" button, Yamaha has an illuminated "ON" or unmute button. So when the "ON" button is illuminated, you're live.  You're not getting those backwards are you?

No I'm sure that this isn't the problem. We have speakers at the stage and then another set of speakers uphill from the stage to cover a different sound stage for our older visitors of the church so they don't have to walk down the hill.

Very long story but I recently got this job and the amplification/speaker situation is a nightmare. passive speakers at stage. They are peaveys. powered with a small 4 channel powered mixer. Yamaha mixer isn't powered. Speaker cable is run uphill to a "cabin" with an industrial amp and a behringer dsp. The speakers that cut on and off are Bose

They stay off and I have run up the hill and turn the dsp back on again. Could you explain your theory? Honestly not sure about what this means.

Once again, you have not provided enough information.  What model DSP and what industrial amp?  Are you sending a speaker or line level signal uphill?  Sorry but we are not just being picky.  It all matters.

How are the speakers connected to the mixer?  The same or different outputs.  If different, swap them and see if the unmute problems follows, remains, or goes away.

You either need to do some troubleshooting of the wiring yourself, or you need to provide much more complete information about what is going on. Exactly what button do you push to mute the mics in question? What is the console? What is the DSP? Is there possibly a remote control set up to turn off the DSP from the console so at the end of the day no one has to go do it? What outputs of the console are driving each of these speaker systems?

Al this is important information to help you solve your problem.

OP, where are you located?  Some folks here may be willing to donate an hour or two of their expertise an act of service and help you sort this out or maybe point you to someone you can hire to fix this.  Fixing this issue remotely will likely be difficult at best.
