Standing by...
« on: July 03, 2017, 08:30:16 PM »

I'm sitting behind the Hatch bandshell as the dress rehearsal for tomorrow's live broadcast from Boston harbor goes on. It's about an hour to our first fireworks cue. 1812 pyro support fires tonight and gets reloaded for tomorrow. The full fireworks show won't happen till tomorrow. Looking forward to Melissa Etheridge, not so much Andy Grammer.

Standby Pyro....

Televised on Bloomberg network tonight.

We went one year, what an experience. They say 7 barges this year.  I don't remember how many in the 90's.  It  was a bucket list item.

My wife tried to keep up with me (old days) in an after hours Chinese restaurant that served alcohol.  We had to get her to the room on bell cart.  That was after we did the entire freedom walk.

The prevention is worth it, Henry.  Therapy after the fact would be very expensive.

Must be tricky/fun coordinating the pyro cues so that the visuals at the speed of light coincide with the kaplosions at the speed of sound, no matter where the spectators are.  :D

This is something Fireworks by Grucci has down pat. Everything is fired via FSK timecode with each display time to open on the right beat of the music. Beside the system in the Hatch there are distributed systems all around the Boston waterfront. The sound is never real far away and the fireworks are timed to real time music.

My job is distributing the time code to the remote firing positions via radio.

I already about half deaf from the howitzers getting fired all day long without warning. It's exciting if it's not hurting you.

My part of the load out is done an I'm back at my hotel. The show went very well and was beautiful. I hope some of you New Englanders got to see it in person. It may have looked good on TV. I'll know tomorrow when I watch my DVR.

We (wife and I) recorded it and just watched it.  Bloomberg carried it.  Wasn't in HD but had dolby digital audio feed.  The mix was center channel heavy but very listenable.   The orchestra was very well balanced and the audience mic's captured the ambiance.  Great videography, the aerial's were excellent.  The military choir all mic'd up with the DPA's was excellent as was their brass ensemble in front of the pop's.

The FSK is a cool way to send the timecode .  Is it standard SMPTE?  The FSK makes me think it is similar technology used in SCADA systems for telemetry.

When they fired the cannons (those shells are huge) we thought of you.  Sounds like a fun gig?  What time was your call?  Long day?

Take care and travel safe.

Is nudity actually illegal in the US though?  I'm sure it's not here.  If it was, we wouldn't have events like the naked cycle ride through London.

Public nudidty is illegal nearly everywhere in the US.

It's a good thing, most of our population isn't fit for public display.

Most people think our anti-nudity laws are to enforce some kind of puritanical view of the human body. Really it's to protect the eye sight and emotional integrity of the rest of the population.

The people who want to get naked in public are never the ones that you actually want to see naked.   :-X
