Bulk mic cable
« on: June 22, 2017, 08:55:52 AM »

I'm in the process of weeding out my mic cables to eliminate the oddball brands and shorties. I was wondering what the consensus was between Hosa and EWI. I really like the jacket on the Hosa cable and they've worked well as do the EWI cables I have. I'm leaning towards the EWI because of the price. Are there any other brands I should consider?

I'm retired, so i don't use much mic & interconnect cable. But if I were to make a purchase, I would stick with the major bulk cable manufactures.
Manufactures like:
Belden
Canare
Mogami
also add
Gepco
West Penn

I buy bulk Canare mic cable and the gold plated pins/black-barrel Neutrik XLRs and make my own, and haven't had a single failure in 5 years. Why mess around? You would love the confidence that a pro quality cable would give you, and if you are OK at soldering they really aren't much more expensive than the budget brands, except for your time investment. I can do 20 of them in an evening's time.

Wasn't there a thread just like this recently? http://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/topic,163912.0.html

Strictly of the two, EWI. But I roll with mainly DIY Pro Co/Canare, the cheap cables I use for impromptu ropes.

Canare w Neutrik for stage use here too. Someone mentioned Mogami, which is great cable, but I keep it n the studio only as my feeling is it is not quite as durable. I think quality cables are worth the investment and I roll my own as well so I know they are built well and saves money if you have the time and skill.

That said, I do have a pile of GLS cables (homemade as well) that will not die. Not a single one after 5 years of stage use. Go figure.

I guess I searched on the wrong word combo. Thanks for pointing out the thread

Same, I have 40 or 50 GLS cables and they're great. Going on 5 years too!

Is there much difference between
CANARE L-2T2S
&
CANARE L-4E6S
?

Price is basically the same at my local.
How do they compare, durability, weight, thickness, etc.

4E6S is a Star Quad (4 conductor) cable and costs 2x what the 2T2S, which is a standard 23AWG mic cable.  Detailed spec is available on the Canare web site. The star quad is stiffer and more difficult to solder ends onto but has reduced microphonics.
