Favorite way to waste time during rehearsal
« on: June 14, 2017, 08:18:07 PM »

What are your favorite ways to waste time during an excruciatingly long tech rehearsal where you have nothing to do but wait for the director to make art?  :'(

Some of mine:

Surf PSW and the DUC
Post pics of the rehearsal on FB
Finish reading the script
Go into preview and finish programming the rest of the show
Try to decipher the nonsensical gibberish that the lighting department is yammering about on coms
Catch a power nap
Work on paper work for the next show
Look for/apply for another job
Weigh the pros and cons of updating some kind of important piece of gear or software during the rehearsal

Email, scheduling other gigs, Facebook, paperwork, processing bills....  wishing I was anywhere else.

Develop recipes for The Cannibal Kitchen Channel.
This goes along with another I thought about: design an unnecessarily complicated Rube Goldberg-like death machine into which to feed this production's scenic designer who thinks he's God's gift to theatre.

Write some Haiku poetry....

Never read the play
before you see it performed.
There’s too much drama.

Tonight's rehearsal: 3 1/2 hours long. A full orchestra dress and THEN an hour of piano tech.  :o

Did I mention that it's a youth opera with 50 kids between 8 and 16?   :-\

This might be the most brilliant thing I've ever seen anywhere on any of the forums. LOL!

I don't see:

Downloading datasheets for all the gear in eyeshot
Practicing label tape penmanship
Frequency training with an ear bud in one ear

But poetry, recipes and scoping better employment sound like self improvement exercises as well.

Years ago, when I was involved in musical theater, the dancers noticed that I was at all the rehearsals they were. At the end of the run they presented me with a t-shirt, black of course, that said, "I can't... I have rehearsal!"

Just spent 3 weeks monitoring 58 channels of wireless and submixing a choir under the stage of an outdoor opera.

Brought a case full of multicore cables, LK37 connectors and a crimp tool with me.

You win.
Most tedious and practical use of your time.
Let me know your next gig. I've got an old board I want to recap......... ;D
