Access Devices from another campus HELP!!!
« on: May 24, 2017, 09:58:51 PM »

Calling all Network Masters.
I have a need for about a year to access “Devices” from Extron, and a few others over the internet. I will be at a school about an hour away from the devices I want to control and adjust. The far end is on the public network (129.x.x.x) on the campus. My devices can see the internet, But I don’t know the best way for me to see them. I need to be able to do this from work and home when needed. The simple way I see is to place a computer at the far end and access it with something like Team Viewer. But what if that PC goes south on me. I would like to establish a direct path. Is this something the mid-level tech can do?

Most routers have VPN servers built in.  Install the VPN software client on your computer and it creates an interface that is on the local LAN at the remote end.  Safe, secure and encrypted.

Thanks Scott. My thought was a VPN as you stated, but my network guys were not around to consult.
I was happy when you responded, as I know you have the kowledge.

Could anyone address the merits of something like team viewer vs VPN in terms of security?  I've always been curious about the merits of each.

Sure, setting up a VPN is not difficult.

Team Viewer requires a host.  It's not the intended use.  A VPN extends the network.  The data is encrypted it's as secure as it gets.  VPN's are used for ATM's and many sensitive applications that use the Internet for transport.
