Wired !

I've had to resort to things like this (RCAs) in the past, but now i'd be fearful of what I would melt inside the connectors.  I 'm glad it worked for you this time... just don't remove the Ty-Rap (tm).  Oh, and add a bit of Shrink Wrap (tm) over the whole thing!  A few months, or years, from now you will be cutting it open to see what it was you you did (was it a mono-Y or stereo)?  :P

All that trouble , why didn't he just cut the cables and solder the wire?

I once used a metallic chewing gum wrapper to convert a stereo headphone to mono, for a jury-rigged trade show demo, when my exhibit shipment arrived late.

I hope you brought enough gum for everyone that was there.

If I had a soldering iron with me and could wait for it to warm up, I would do this.

If I was going to cut the plugs off, stripping, twisting and taping the joints would do.

The wire in those cables can sometimes be very difficult to work with. Tiny strands coated with insulation that has to be burned off, etc.

Yup.  This would have also been easier to solder without a pana-vise.

Not to mention the challenge of identifying which color wires did what, especially in the 4 conductor side....
