Bass guitar, keys, drum machines.  The usual stuff (for me anyway).

In the studio on headphones, maybe.  Live sound, I doubt it.
Many times I EQ mid-bass out of keys anyway, so there goes the .003% distortion.

BTW Whirlwind Director works fine for line level sources at 1/2 price.

J48 is one of the best in the biz for hot signals. That's where you really notice it

Type 85 has fewer switches. Sounds better already...

Passive instrument - Type 85
Active instrument - Passive DI (Jensen transformer preferred)

There are exceptions, but that's my starting point.

As a bass player using passive pickups I prefer the sound and feel of the higher input impedence of the Type 85 over the Radial when the box is between my bass and amp. This preference is likely specific to my bass/amp/personal preference.

From a sound provider perspective I'm not sure that it matters as much, other than the Type 85 may be a better fit with unbuffered piezo pickups as well.

Definitely type 85 because my shootout found it sounded too thinner or noisier. Its capable of producing great results, but in comparison the 85 still better in term of transparency.

I have both.  While I grab the Type 85 on stand-up bass, and the J48 on acoustic guitars in general, I'm not sure I have good reasons why.  Can I actually hear the difference in live reproduction?  No.  Maybe yes on specific instruments, and I have enough time/experience with that particular instrument.

I will say that I use the LR Baggs Paracoustic DI when I know the guitar in question has a K&K setup, because my experience says it is a good combination.  The K&Ks need the higher impedance, and the output is high enough to give enough boost to the passive K&K.
