Will a powercon hook up be sufficient for my amp rack?
« on: April 30, 2017, 03:12:16 PM »

I just finished building a small biamp amp rack. I finished it yesterday replacing a EV P1250 with a CP2200s for HF duties.

I have in the rack:

Dynacord version of the D.C. One
EV CP2200
EV CP4000s
EV CP4000s
Dynacord Cobra amp panel.

I want to add a powercon hook up to my amp rack to make setup easy. The largest system I could every possible use this rack with would be:

4xQRX115
4xPX2181

Most of the time only, one PX2181 a side. Will this draw more than the 20 amps and pop the breaker and I understand this would be the only rack on the circuit?

The reason for doing this is to cut down on extension cord quad box and such. I like to make the system as clean as possible. I was looking for a CP1200 or CP1800 for the HF, but the power draw is only 100 watts difference then the amps I was looking for. Plus for $300 I couldn't pass on a very clean unused amp.

I would used 12 gauge SO junior cable, 300v for the main power
con cable.

Manual says:

CP4000s 1070 watts x2 = 2140
CP2200 600 watts

So that 2740 watts or around 23 amps not including the processor. What are your thoughts?

That would be 23A peak or about 7.7A continuous at heavy clipping(1/3 power) which you're probably not gonna do.. you'll be at 1/8 power with light occasional clipping at most, and the Powercon like most electrical devices is rated for a continuous load so hopefully that should answer your question.

FWIW, there is a version of the powerCON connector that is rated for 32A at 250 volts. I assume that it is designed as a mains connector in the British system.  It takes up to a 10 AGW wire, if you contemplate a long run of your power cord.
