I still contend it's called duck tape since it's such foul stuff.

I remember when they were 60 yards long...
55 yards is almost exactly 50 meters.  With most products being made over seas, I guess THEY prefer to cut it at 50 meters instead of 55 meters.

I buy both the good stuff and the cheap stuff. I use them for different tasks.

For example, putting a temp label on a case I am not using $20 tape. I have cheap in multiple colors and use the colors to indicate where stuff goes or, for example in a couple of weeks, a festival with 4 stages, which stage to deliver the gear too.

Use good stuff when it must stick good and come off with leaving residue.

Aaagh!!!

Gaffer or gaffer's tape... not gaff!!!

Steve.

Most people I've worked with in Canada call it gaff tape. And it comes in many colours. Or colors. As long as it sticks.

If you do find a residue left behind, pure orange oil works great for removing it, even after it becomes dry and hard.  I have found a product sold at Wally World that is marketed as an air freshener (Pure Citrus brand) but works well as a general surface cleaner and awesome at removing tape gunk.

I get ProGaffer from www.thetapeworks.com

It seems to be consistent in both thickness and adhesion.  I've had it leave residue when applied for weeks or in very hot circumstances but not in typical uses.  About $14/2"x55yd roll.  I remember when they were 60 yards long...

Thanks Tim - good link.

Yes- I expect some residue if left in place for extended periods of time - however, I expect a 'clean break' when only used for a day or evening show.
It is surprising how many musicians I come across who don't even know what Gaffer tape is let alone the difference between it and quack tape.

It was called Duct tape back in WWII.

It would shed water like a ducks feathers.

It was often used to keep ammo cans sealed from the weather.

I knew an old helicopter pilot veteran (Vietnam, I think) who called it 90 mile-per-hour tape. It was good for fixing anything that went up to 90 mph. He said that they used it to patch delaminating rotor blades, which, needless to say, go much faster through the air than 90 mph, even if the forward progress of the craft is on that scale. Whatever, I like the name.

Best,

It takes gum off the bottom of your shoe!

It also takes the new low-VOC finishes off of floors.

Back in the day when they could use plenty of noxious solvents and binders in the floor finishes, the stuff would peel up cleanly and leave the finish intact. Now with these "environmentally friendly" finishes, you don't dare stick it on the floor. I think the adhesive softens the finish, especially the water-based finishes. Time to buy cable ramps... cheaper than paying to refinish someone else's floor.
