Install digital processor/mixer
« on: April 22, 2017, 11:11:54 AM »

Hi,

I'm doing an install in a church, and looking ideas for the main system processor/mixer. It's a set-and-forget system really...only 6 mics in total (3 on altar, 1 wireless handheld and 2 in the gallery for the choir) and a single zone output. Looking for something that can give me advanced control using an iPad or laptop or something for setting eq, compression etc on install, but that still has knobs on the front so that the end users have some basic control. I would have used BSS London soundweb devices for this in the past, but looking something a little cheaper if possible. Any recommendations?

Allen & Heath QU-16.  Very similar in feel to an analogue board, but with digital capabilities and excellent sound.

Yea i was actually thinkin of using a QU SB or QU PAC but just wondering if there is anything else out there. This will sit in a rack and only maybe be touched once or twice a year so don't necessarily need full faders...even just knobs for volume would be fine

I'd suggest a QU-PAC + an Apple Airport Express
Use QU-PAD for your setup & the QU-Control APP for your clients.

I like the Ashly NE24-24, configured as needed, with the FR-8 or 16 fader bank. You can also build a simple or complex control interface on iPad for the Ashly.

This is exactly the situation where QSC QSys or Symetrix Prism or similar shine.

Cheaper then BSS though? Doubtful

I put a QU-PAC into 2 different church installs last year. Each had only a handful of wireless and wired inputs and mains / baby room outputs. Both congregations are very happy with the units. Neither has dedicated tech staff or voulenteers and seem to navigate things well as needed.

Hardware, no.  Once you figure in programming time & UI development it may be a wash.  I've found QSYS to be a lot easier/faster to program (and much more powerful) than BSS.

The devil you know. I can program a UI twice as fast in AA than Qsys. It would be three times as fast if AA had hot keys. I will agree that Qsys is more powerful if you are doing advanced scripting. If you are routing input to output with some bits in the middle... they both get it done.
