Without Chuck Berry rock and roll would be a nice polite affair.  Chuck knew just how far he could push the raunch and still get away with it to a larger audience.  Without Chuck paving the way, I suspect folks like Little Richard and Jerry Lee would have been passing blips, overshadowed by watered down "acceptable" acts.  Elvis would have ended up like Pat Boone.
