1RU Rack Chassis for D-Series connectors?
« on: March 14, 2017, 01:18:42 PM »

Is there an off-the-shelf rack chassis that has pre-punched Neutrik-D-Series-compatible holes? I'm interested in making something similar to the "poor man's powercon distro", and I thought I'd look into the DIY options before getting quotes on getting something custom-made.

I'm looking for something like this (see image), but as an enclosed chassis, and preferably with connector holes on both the front and back.

I didn't find one when I made a PMD. I used the Redco 1U enclosure and machined my own jack holes.

Redco, Entertainment Metals, or other custom shops probably can make one up for you.

+1 for a poor mans PowerCon Distro using a RedCo chassis.  I recommend the 10" deep unless you're good with tight spaces.  http://www.redco.com/Redco-CH1-10-10-Deep-1U-Rackmount-Chassis.html

Also, their D Series labels are fantastic.  They turn them around same/next day.  http://www.redco.com/Redco-DP-LABEL.html

Nice! FWIW, it looks like they now have a dropdown option for pre-punching up to 16 "xlr holes" on the front and/or back when ordering. They're closed for the snowstorm today; I'll give them a call later this week to discuss. Thanks, guys.

Middle Atlantic UCP system

It's 2 RU but really solid when assembled

That's pretty slick too, Craig. I'll definitely revisit that next time I need something like this and have a bit more rack space to spare.

I found that 16 was too many. Too hard to disconnect. 12 worked fine on version 2.
Also, I never used 4 sources so no point. If I needed so much power as 4 circuits I asked for a larger feed and used a distro.

Version 2 used a middle Atlantic 1U chassis with a blank front. I removed to front and attached the box to a 1U panel with 12 D holes.

A $79 ART P16 with XLR connectors removed?
However, the spacing is so close I'm not sure 16x NAC3MPA will fit.  Even if they fit, the Powercon plugs probably won't fit next to each other.

Probably too tight.  That Art unit uses a different punch/hole pattern for the mounting screws.  :(   Its off just enough.  :-/  I tried to recycle mine as a pass thru for data EtherCons/USB/FireWire, etc.

16 is def too tight!  I am using 8 and think its cozy but you could do 12.

(no I am not using all 24.  the edisons could probably be removed since converting everything to powercon)

Hammond makes some nice rack boxes, and the panels are replaceable should you bugger one when drilling/punching.  (Get a punch with a ball bearing thingie - it's well worth it.)

This is the one I've used on many projects. Always worked well for me.

Nice panel, but no enclosure, so not a good choice for a project involving mains voltage.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think I'll go with the redco unit. I was going to go with 16 punches, front and back, but I'll stick to 12 based on your advice. That should be plenty!
