Dante Over Microwave IP Link
« on: March 09, 2017, 07:44:03 AM »

Does anyone have experience of transmitting Dante over a microwave IP link - using something like Ubiquiti AirFibre or AirMax products? I know that it cannot be run over normal Wifi but wondering if the higher bandwidth and lower latency of these links makes it feasible to use as a site to site link for multi channel audio.

Almost tried it an annual event last year, will try it in anger in July this year.

But interestingly I got this yesterday…
https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanobeam-ac-gen2/
With a marketing testimonial saying:
"I'm blown away by the improvement. This customer was burning up airtime from the retransmits, sometimes shooting up to 15% usage while streaming, now peaks at 5% while streaming. These GEN2 units are so awesome....  - UnicornWrangler"

AFAIK Dante won't handle any retransmits. It needs a solid 0% retransmits. Anything not there in real time is lost data.

There's this: Xirium-Pro. Two-channels of Dante over RF. I have no experience with it though.

Still, I imagine you would like to go above 2-channel transmission, right?

We had this conversation last year.

I believe the end result was Dante doesn't support 802.11 wifi frame types only 802.3 wired Ethernet

Yes, this would be for a multi channel application that would benefit from being IP based. If it was just a 2 channel set up we would probably use UHF audio links.

So do products like the AirFiber https://dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/airfiber/airFiber_DS.pdf that are specifically desined for PTP backhaul still use 802.11 wifi standards?

That's odd, it opens the PDF datasheet for me both on Firefox/Windows10 and iOS. This is the product page: https://www.ubnt.com/airfiber/airfiber24/

Oddly it doesn't work from there either.

Those could be transparent bridges from a network perspective.   Might work.  You ever lined up a millimeter wave radio?  It's touchy, on a 10 mile path you can miss your target by miles with the slightest misalignment.

Have they started shipping this again after their recent recall?

Also, this does not transmit Dante. It is two separate Dante networks on each side of the wireless link.
