Math Brain is just not Working Today
« on: January 21, 2017, 02:57:34 PM »

Ok, so tomorrow, Sunday, January 22, I am installing a speaker that is 10" wide, horizontal and 12" deep front to back.  I am installing this speaker in a corner.  So the platform that I am putting together needs to be a right triangle and the speaker will be placed at the 45 degree center line at the lip of the platform.  I come up with side A of the triangle being 8" long, side B of the triangle being 8" long and the center point on the C axis being 16" from the corner.  This simply doesn't sound right to me.  This is a right angle triangle.  If anyone can help my brain is just not working.

I really should have paid more attention in the 3rd Grade.

Thanks
Bill

Always remember A sq + B sq =C sq.

So for ZERO clearance, the back of the speaker would be 5" from the wall.

So you add the 12" depth of the speaker and you have 17" for 1/2 of the front length of your board. which is 34"

So you square 34" (the hypotenuse), then divide by 2.  You get 568.  Take the square root and you get 24"

So each side (down the walls) would be 24" and the front would be 34"

You might want to allow for clearance-so make it 25 or 26" down the walls.  Of course the front distance will also increase.

Thanks Ivan, my brain just hasn't been up to doing this today.

Like a lot of things, if you remember a couple of simple "relationships", you can easily figure out (or come close enough) other answers.

Some of the "important" relation ships I like to remember are:

1: Loss over 100' distance (vs 1m) is almost 30dB.  So 50' is 24dB and 200' is 36dB.  Double or half distance is a 6dB change.

2:  1000 watts is a gain of 30dB over 1 watt.   double or half power is 3dB.
