Eucalyptus Plywood?
« on: January 21, 2017, 02:20:34 PM »

Looking at the specs for the new Presonus ULT model speakers, I see they are built from eucalyptus ply. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this material in audio cabinets or other applications, and if there is any opinion about how it might perform. Reading wiki, it would seem to be superior to the poplar ply that some cheaper cabs are made from.

Yeah, we call it chinese plywood here. Can barely properly hold a screw.

I don't know if it is the same thing, but a couple of decades ago I got some "birch" ply from a local lumber yard.

It was birch laminate on "something" in the middle.

It smelt pretty bad when I was cutting it.

I built some cabinets for a friend.  He complained that after the cabinets were in his truck for a few days the back smelled like somebody threw up.

This smell lasted for a couple of years.

Everything he owned stunk really bad when they first loaded into a club.

It was lighter than real birch.

I would never buy it again-no matter the price.

I recently bought a sheet of 3/4" "Chinese birch" to make some casterboards. I guess I'll see how it does with tee-nuts and moderate loads....

I haven't used eucalyptus plywood but the name sounds like a marketing distraction, so I'm skeptical. I'm not sure if wood species is as critically important as how the plies are bonded together.

My experiences with Chinese plywood have been disappointing. Pricing is good so you WANT to believe in it. The stuff looks okay when you buy it --decent face, lots of plies, but the face peels or wears off like paper, and the core plies delaminate randomly.

When I can't afford something like Baltic birch, I've been happy with the Chilean AraucoPly. Not as smooth and pretty but relatively void-free, and the laminations stay rock-solid. Very stable and strong wood. I have some three or four-year-old cabinets made from AraucoPly and the grain doesn't print or pop beneath the paint in the same way some other pine plywoods do.

Laminate. Lots of ply layers.  A little cheaper than ACX would have been.

I used almost every type of plywood/MDF over the years. Tried different techniques, different glues, etc. After all was said and done, I use baltic almost exclusively now. All of my boxes are painted, and all edges are slightly routed and exposed. The cost difference is more than offset by the savings in labor to fill in voids and defects, not to mention the grief when a section de-laminates after they have been painted.
Cost of a 4x8x3/4 baltic is approx $65, same in Chinese birch is $ 27.50.

I'm in the process of making a front door for our house out of Bamboo ply.
We'll see how it holds up, but it looks marvelous.
